XI. Floods of Spring (Allegro vivace) (Fyodor Tyutchev, 1803–1873)
Jeshchjo v poljakh belejet sneg,
A vody uzh vesnoj shumjat --
Begut i budjat sonnyj breg,
Begut, i bleshchut, i glasjat...
Oni glasjat vo vse koncy:
«Vesna idjot, vesna idjot!
My molodoj vesny goncy,
Ona nas vyslala vperjod.
Vesna idjot, vesna idjot,
I tikhikh, teplykh majskikh dnej
Rumjanyj, svetlyj khorovod
Tolpitsja veselo za nej!»
The fields are still covered with white snow.
But the streams are already rolling in a spring mood,
Running and awakening the sleepy shore,
Running and glittering and announcing loudly.
They are announcing loudly to every corner:
"Spring is coming, Spring is coming!
We are the messengers of young Spring,
She has sent us to come forward,
Spring is coming, Spring is coming!
And the quiet, warm May days
Follow her, merrily crowded
Into the rosy, bright dancing circle."
Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951)
Two Songs, Op. 14, No. 1 (1908)
I. Ich darf nicht dankend
(Stefan Anton George, 1868-1933,
Das Jahr der Seele [The Year of the Soul, 1907] -
Waller in Schnee [Victory in the Snow]: IV)
Will sich mein trost an deine wehmut schmiegen
I am not allowed thankfully to kneel down before you,
You are of the spirit of the field which nurtured us.
If my consolation were to snuggle up to your anguish,
You would shrug and refuse it.
Is it your plan to stick to your cruel decision,
Never to admit your pain.
And only to go forth with it and me
Along the ice-clear deep-frozen river?
Anton Webern (1883-1945)
Six Songs after Poetry of Georg Trakl [1887-1914], Op. 14 (1921)
I. The Sun
Hebt der Wanderer leise die schweren Lider;
Sonne aus finsterer Schlucht bricht.
Daily the yellow sun comes over the hill
Beautiful is the forest, the dark animal,
man, hunter or shepherd.
Red rises the fish in the green pond
Under the round sky the fisherman
goes quietly in the blue bark,
Slowly ripens the grape, the grain.
When the day quietly draws to its end, both a
good and an evil is waiting.
When it becomes night,
the wanderer raises quietly his heavy eyelids,
Sun bursts from the dark ravine.
Paul Hindemith (1895-1963)
Three Hymns by Walt Whitman [1819-1892], Op. 14 (1919)
I. Ages and Ages (Der ich, in Zwischenraumen - Johannes Schlaf, 1862-1941)
Ages and ages, returning at intervals,
Undestroy'd, wandering immortal,
Lusty, phallic, with the potent original loins, perfectly sweet,
I, chanter of Adamic songs,
Through the new garden, the West, the great cities calling,
Deliriate, thus prelude what is generated, offering these,
offering myself,
Bathing myself, bathing my songs in Sex,
Offspring of my loins.
in süßer Fülle;
Der ich, Sänger adamitischer Gesänge,
Durch den neuen Garten des Westens,
durch die großen Städte rufe;
