Harriet's Uncle Bob Martin is laid to rest at
Fort
Rosecrans
National
[Military,
clearly]
Cemetary
on
the
Point
Loma
Peninsula
in
an
impressive,
moving,
surreal
ceremony,
involving
the
unfolding
and
refolding of a flag -- ultimately given to the next-of-kin daughter Bonnie Sweeney, who,
after a trumpeter's solemn delivery of
taps,
delivers a brief homily.
Across
Cabrillo
Memorial
Drive,
to
the
wall
columbaria,
there
are
more
informal
reminiscences
of
this remarkable 103-year-old gentleman,
all on a gloriously summery winter afternoon (high 76).
The
day
begins
in
the
moderne
Mediterranean
modality
of
our
San
Diego
overnight,
just
north
of
downtown
San
Diego,
followed
by
a
jaunt
across
town
to
Tuna
Harbor
Park,
with
its
quixotic /
whimsical
monuments
and
striking
views.
Lunch
at
Fish
Market
Market,
wonderfully
organized
by
Bonnie...
reuniting
far-flung
relatives -- including Carolyn,
Rodie, and Matt --
over
sumptuous
spreads,
right
up
to
an
11th-hour
dash
to the
memorial.
After,
a
quick
circuit
along
the
Peninsula
and
final
gathering
at
Bonnie
and
husband
Bill's
local stay on Shelter Island.
Finally,
off with Harriet
briefly to the
adjacent scenic park
and
long progression,
on
circuituous
paths
near
invading
coastal
fog,
to
dark
destinations
in
the
dead
of night.
